UNIONDALE, NY (PIX11) — Uniondale High School is committed to empowering students. It started with an idea the director of guidance had when Stacey Reid arrived at the school in 2007.
“For a school of this size, I was a bit taken aback by the size of the university’s career room. It was a small office and felt like it wasn’t meeting the needs of the students,” says Reid.
Her plan came true last year. After getting permission from the school board, the school converted an empty classroom into a state-of-the-art facility with computers and virtual conferencing capabilities. Their goal is to provide students with the tools and resources they need to navigate and complete the college application process.
You can talk to counselors and university representatives, fill out applications, and write essays in your new space. As a result of the success of this new initiative, the school was recognized by EDTrust as having the most of his FAFSA apps. In fact, this is the first time that three of her students at Uniondale have received her QuestBridge full scholarships at Stanford, Princeton and Boston Universities. The reason for this is that in her first two years he had to overcome the challenge of spending most of his high school years in distance learning where 90% was distance learning.
This initiative not only ensures that students have access to higher education, but also sows the seeds they need to have the opportunity to grow. It’s also about building a community that lasts a lifetime.
