On January 30, 2023, Coronado High School held its first annual college and career fair. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors had to report to campus at 8:30 am as usual. Seniors had to arrive at 9:30.
speaker and presentation
The timetable from 8:30 am to 11:35 am was set in detail for each grade. In all he had three different rotations. Grades 1 and 2 began in the gymnasium to hear from a guest speaker. Ward, a motivational speaker, spoke to the audience for an hour about how we all have intrinsic and extrinsic motivation throughout our lives. I was asked to turn my head and think about what I want to succeed. Ward reiterated how Generation Z is a consumerist generation. The students were reminded that they need to keep in mind the right mindset to succeed rather than just thinking about money for their future careers.
Junior started the day at the Black Box Theater for a counseling presentation. All of the Coronado High School counselors shared information that these up-and-coming seniors should keep in mind. Beyond just talking about classes, they provided information about her SAT/ACT, college application process, SCOIR (a platform used to put college application materials), and career aptitude tests. Finally, the counselor distributed class selection sheets to the students to select classes for the following year. While the 2024 class first heard a counselor presentation, the freshman and her sophomore also had the opportunity to hear from her CHS counselor in the morning.
College & Career Fair
The most anticipated event was the actual fair. It was held at the 400 Building Hall and the Coronado High Library. Over 15 of his four-year colleges attended. It was attended by representatives from Pennsylvania State University, San Diego State University, the University of the Pacific of Hawaii and others. University representatives handed out flyers, merchandise, and information pamphlets. In addition to four-year colleges, there were community colleges such as Mesa and City College, and alternative colleges such as the New School of Architecture and Design and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Also included were the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard for those interested or interested in military service.
The 2023 class of Seniors was welcome to attend college and career fairs and visit with delegates, but attendance at the Guest Speaker Assembly was the only requirement. If seniors didn’t want to attend the fair, there were optional workshops to attend on themes such as financial aid, life after applying to college, and community her path to college.
Overall, it seemed like a great experience for all grade levels and a valuable new annual event.
