Max Muncy came seemingly out of nowhere for the Dodgers in the 2018 MLB season. After playing in just 96 career MLB games before coming to Los Angeles, where he had five homers and 17 RBIs in OPS +70, Muncy burst onto the scene in his 2018, hitting 35 homers and hitting 79. Breaking RBI and showing off his OPS+ is impressive. 161. His .973 OPS wasn’t too shabby either.
Muncey then did even better in 2019, hitting 35 home runs and 98 RBIs and being named to the All-Star team for the first time in his career.
Muncie will make another All-Star team in 2021 and play a key role in the Dodgers’ World Series victory in 2020. started.
The Dodgers Nation had a chance to talk with Muncie about what happened before he joined the Dodgers.
“When I got out of Oakland and sat on the couch, I was like, ‘I’m glad it’s over. Maybe baseball’s over. I just don’t enjoy it anymore.'”
Muncie was released by the Oakland Athletics in 2017 and spent some time at home. However, he began missing games and joined the Dodgers on a minor league contract shortly thereafter.
“I think the biggest thing for me was that I had to learn to enjoy it. It’s also the only sport where you can do everything 100% right. There’s a man standing there. It was a very frustrating sport, so for me that was one of the things I lost the ability to enjoy. has lost the ability to smile on the field.”
The Dodgers took a chance on the 27-year-old, but he quickly proved to be a good investment.
309 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs with the Oklahoma City Dodgers in 2017 and was called up to the Dodgers in early 2018. When he got up, he never looked back.
Part of it had to do with the swing adjustments Muncy made, but he said it really had to do with the mental side of the game and the shift in his attitude and approach.
“If you want to try this again, you have to change your attitude towards it. And that was the biggest thing. But I just had to relearn how to have fun, how to make it a kid’s game, how to just smile when I’m outside. Enjoy being there You’re with your friends You were cheered by the fans and booed at the same time It’s great That’s what baseball is all about It’s fun So the Dodgers embraced me By supporting him, he will relearn how to have fun and will do anything for the Dodgers.
Muncie was able to do just that on his way to becoming one of the most important Dodgers in this consistent National League contender. Muncey’s struggles last season were all too evident, with the Dodgers missing his All-Star at-bat in the lineup and backing up the top spot in the standings.Muncey’s elbow injury kept the Dodgers from winning his 2021 season. undoubtedly played a major role in And that he wasn’t the same player hurt them throughout his 2022 regular season and postseason.
But now, Mansey is more than a year away from injury and is poised to put last season behind him and play an even bigger role in a team that lacks many of last season’s key contributors. has suddenly become one of the longest-serving Dodgers, so he must play a major role as a leader both on the field and in the clubhouse.
