Fort Hood, Texas — Dozens of swingarms cut through the crisp morning air as the Soldier zips around the track. Completing this two mile marks the first event to enter the 3rd Armored Force Career Counselor of the Year competition held here January 9-12, 2023.
The contest tested the best career counselors of the 3rd Armored Force through a series of events. The sequence of events begins with an Army Combat Fitness Test, followed by a written exam, and ends with a formal commission of his career counselor.
Ultimately, only one soldier from each component would win as the 3rd Armored Division’s 2023 Career Counselor of the Year. From the active duty component, the designation belonged to Sergeant. Quinn Cursley, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. It was Sergeant who got the title from the spare component. First class Heron Perez.
Carsley drove over eight hours to compete with twelve other representatives of the 3rd Armored Force.
Competition NCO, Sergeant. Private First Class Alisa Licata, 3rd Armored Forces Command, explained the importance of distant units of the force moving to compete.
“We talk to them on a daily basis, whether it’s on the phone or on the computer, but that’s the only way we know them,” Licata said. We can meet each other.”
The sound of the pen scratching the paper heralded the beginning of the second event. His grueling written exam consisted of 50 questions.
Looking back at the exam, contest winner Carsley explains why it was the most difficult event.
“The written exam was very detailed. There were a lot of difficult questions that I had to really study to answer correctly,” Carsley said.
Despite this sentiment, Kearsley’s written test scored the highest among all competitors.
Once the final event began, the full-dressed competitors waited their turn to dress up and enter the boardroom.
Cursley’s senior leader, Sgt. Brian Blackmore, 1st Class, 1st Armored Division, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, shared the secret of Carsley’s victory.
“It’s his desire to study, to look things up,” said Blackmore. “He liked to think outside the box and was very passionate about his work when we were preparing strategic-level questions.”
Applause erupted from the atrium when Carsley was officially named the 3rd Armored Force Active Component Career Counselor of the Year for 2023.
“I feel like the extra effort paid off when I get selected for a piece like this. It’s not just for me, it’s for my unit and my soldiers.”
Following this victory, Kersley and Perez will represent the 3rd Armored Division at the United States Army Command’s (FORSCOM) convention in early February.
