Wilmington, North Carolina – Monmouth guard Ariana Vanderhoop scored five points in the final 30 seconds to give UNCW a slight 55-52 setback in the Colonial Athletic Association’s women’s basketball action at the Trask Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. .
The Hawks (9-10, 4-4 CAA) snapped a three-game losing skid. The Seahawks (4-14, CAA 1-6) split his home game this weekend into two games.

Gross and Vanderhoop amassed a total of 29 points in a high-scoring fourth quarter that included one draw and three lead changes. The Hawks extended their lead to a quarter-high five points, 49-44, before Gross and Gamble hit a pair of layups to make it a one-point game with 47 seconds remaining.
Vanderhoop responded with a 3-pointer, pushing Monmouth’s advantage back to 52-48 by 28 ticks. The Boston, Massachusetts, native sank two of his free throws 17 seconds later to win the game.
The UNCW recovered from an early 20-11 deficit by holding the Hawks to 14-of-14 shooting in the second quarter. With a 13-3 frame, the Seahawks scored his halftime advantage of 26-23.
The third period was hotly contested, going into the fourth quarter in a 34-30 game. The Hawks took their first lead of the second half with their first six points in the fourth before Gross flipped the score at 37–36 in favor of UNCW on an old-fashioned three-point play at the 6:58 mark.
Gross then scored the next 12 points for the Seahawks to keep UNCW within one possession and storm into the final minutes.
The Seahawks will play road games in four of their next five games. The stretch begins with a trip to William & Mary at the Kaplan Arena on Friday at 7pm.
