MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) – Arguably Jalen Wayne is having the best season of his college career, but it’s been a long road for sixth graders.
Jalen joined the team in 2017 from Spanish Fort High School. He’s a year away from the South’s last bowl game. He says it took him some time to get used to playing at the college level.
“Definitely Rocky. I had a lot to learn when I was younger, but I had a lot of older men who set an example and a standard for me personally,” said Jalen Wayne. rice field.
Adapting to college football wasn’t the only thing. Jalen and his linebacker AJ DeShazor are the only ones on the roster to play for all three head coaches, which has been part of several other changes for his Jalen over the past six years. 2 players.
“I had three offensive coordinators, three different offenses, a lot of quarterbacks to play, so being flexible and vulnerable always helped me through the whole process,” Wayne said. rice field.
Despite constant change, Jalen says he learned a lot from all the staff he actually worked with, ultimately making him a better player.
“Three changes of offense helped me learn the scheme and the defense because I need to see what I am good at, what my qualities are and what I can bring to the table. ” said Wayne.
All the work paid off. This season, Jalen set several career highs, including his school record for most touchdowns in a single season, which he broke with nine.
“I think we all have 700 yards, which is something the Sunbelt group of receivers has never done before. It feels good and I personally feel that I have done my job as a leader and as a player,” Wayne added.
With all the records and accolades, there’s still one more goal left. It gave South Alabama its first bowl win in school history.
“What’s special about them is that they don’t experience a bowl game until their senior year,” said head coach Kane Womack.
“I’ve always wanted to do something like this, and to do it last season is kind of the end of the story, but I hope the dubbing ends the way I want it to.” Wayne said.
Jalen and the rest of the Jaguars will be looking for a historic victory against Western Kentucky in the New Orleans Bowl on Wednesday night. Kickoff is at 8:00 from Caesars Superdome.
