LCC WIOA Assists Student in Achieving his Career — Neuse News

When 21-year-old Montreai Woodard of Wolstonburg enrolled at Lenoir Community College (LCC), he knew exactly what he wanted to do. At the time, he was working at a local car dealership. His goal was to enroll in truck driver training and obtain a CDL. After speaking with him, Woodard was able to determine that he was eligible for assistance through LCC’s Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA) Youth Program. This program assists preschoolers between the ages of 16 and 24 who are eligible to receive assistance in schooling, training, and employment.

“Monterey was highly motivated and eager to complete the steps required to enroll in the WIOA Youth Program,” said LCC WIOA Career Advisor Tracy Price. “As a young man raising children, he said his goal was to provide for his family and give his son the best life possible. He registered with WIOA on October 5, 2022. We set two goals: to achieve a

Woodard enrolled in a five-week CDL training class nearby and studied and attended the class while also practicing at home to earn his CRC. He completed his CDL training and received his license on December 9, 2022. Three days later he took the CRC exam and received the highest level Gold Certificate. “For these two achievements, Walmart gave him his $250 gift card in accordance with his WIOA policy on incentives,” Price said.

The WIOA Youth Program also helps with job search, paid work experience, resume writing, and interview skills, she said, but Woodard didn’t need help with any of these program elements. “On December 15th, Montrey received her gift card from Walmart and told me that he was hired as a chauffeur by the Southco Distribution Company of Goldsboro.”

“I’ve worked with many young people over the years to help them reach their goals, and this young man was the fastest I’ve ever worked with.” Price said. “His determination coupled with his enthusiasm was refreshing.”

Woodard said he was grateful for the support he received through WIOA. “I never thought a program like this existed. I will spread the word about this wonderful program to my family and friends.”
