Michigan outlasts Nebraska, Barnes Arico picks up 500th career win


Kim Barnes Ariko achieved his 500th career win Wednesday night as Michigan beat Nebraska 76-59 in Lincoln. More importantly, Michigan improved to his 12-1 on the season and his 2-0 in the big ten play.

It was an electric start for Michigan as the Wolverines leapfrog the Cornhuskers in the opening minutes of the game. Nebraska was unable to resolve Michigan’s stifling defense, and the Wolverines held his 10-3 Cornhuskers to five points in the first quarter at home on his floor.

Emily Kaiser led the first quarter as the 6-foot-3 forward scored 7 points on 3-4 shooting and 3 rebounds. Maddy Nolan added his 5 and Michigan had his 10th minute to give him a 19-5 lead.

But for the remaining 30 minutes, nothing beats the Wolverines’ shooting.

Led by head coach Amy Williams, who was looking for his 300th career win, Nebraska continued to battle despite a slow start. led by nine points.

Former Cornhusker Reiga Brown did everything in his power to keep his former team at bay. Nebraska reduced his lead to just his six points on two different occasions, but Brown was unstoppable as he led Michigan to victory in the second half.

As in most other games, Brown and Kaiser led the scoring with 20 and 18 respectively. Nolan also had a very strong outing where he scored 16 points on his 5-8 shooting, including his 4-6 from 3-point range.

Laila Ferria also finished in double digits with 12 points on 4-10 shooting. Her sophomore year was celebrating her 20th birthday. Barnes said her Ariko was a little out of shape after the game, but her sophomore showed her strength and played a key role in helping Michigan win.

The Wolverines are 12-1 this season and 2-0 in the Big 10. Michigan has the biggest test of the season in store as it travels to Columbus to face her No. 3 Buckeyes on Saturday.

Ohio State is 13-0 so far this season, and senior guard Taylor Mikesell is off to a great start to the season.

The rivalry will begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday. It will be broadcast on BTN.
