Mid-Career Professionals Affinity Group Spotlight

The Mid-Career Professionals Affinity Group (AG) was formed to bridge the gap between the already established Early Career Professionals and Late Career and Retiree AGs for members with 10-25 years of career experience. Mid-Career Professionals AG supports those who are established in their careers and looking for support during the transitions commonly experienced at this stage of their careers. This includes transitions to management levels, career changes, hybrid career paths (technical leadership), career breaks, parenting, caregiving, new ways to excel, re-entering the workforce, and / or include adaptation to changing times. This AG connects members in a virtual setting for networking, sharing best practices, and mutual support.

This layer tends to have responsibilities at work, at home, or in the community, but they understand that time is extremely valuable. This AG is intended to provide a place to stay connected with SWE and get the SWE support you need with minimal commitment or travel. One last thing to add to the to-do list.

Career dimensions are diverse, and the scope of career support is extremely wide. As a first exercise within the group, we asked approximately 150 members to comment in terms that describe what “career engineering” means to them. Below is a captured word cloud.

Leadership meetings held early in the formation of the group indicated that the problem of mid-career recruitment was fairly widespread. From getting on the ranks to caring for them, to finding healthy ways to rest and build resilience, it’s no wonder engineers feel pressured at this point in their careers! I’m looking for someone willing to facilitate conversations about recruitment issues. for example:

  • burnout facilitator
  • promotion to management
  • parenting care
  • technical learning
  • get a sponsor
  • career break
  • return to work
  • A question I want to know more about!

The goal and purpose of these roles is to provide a safe space for topical support, discussion, and collaboration. This includes posting on social media, hosting discussions in comments, hosting Zoom meetings, or hosting meetups in conferences.

AG Co-Chairs Deb Willems (she/her) and Felicia Guerrero Green (she/her) look forward to further establishing the group in its first year. For more information, please contact Deb Willems (debwillemsswe@gmail.com) or Felicia Guerrero Green (feguerre@gmail.com).
