Motley gets 400th career win on Carroll’s Senior Night

Carroll County head coach Mark Motley (standing, second from right) earned his 400th win as a coach on Jan. 24 as the Cavaliers beat Radford 81-16 in Hillsville. It was also Carroll’s senior night, as seniors Karrie Easter, Jerryn Hazy, Ashton Richardson, Lauren Alley, Vera Klotz, and Cody Gardner were all honored.

The game itself was another Three Rivers District laughing stock for Carroll County’s women’s basketball team, but Tuesday night saw Carroll earn her 400th career coaching victory in the Cavaliers’ 81-16 victory over Radford. It was all about six seniors and head coach Mark Motley. hills building.

We watched former players from all eras of Motley’s 21-year head coaching career induct into the CCHS Sports Hall of Fame and join the 400-win club with a win over the Bobcats. Meanwhile, seniors Karrie Easter, Jerryn Hazy, Ashton Richardson, Lauren Alley, Vera Klotz and Cody Gardner were all honored. All have played an equally large role in Motley’s coaching record, as the team compiled an incredible varsity record of 73-6 since the start of his freshman season.

Motley, on the other hand, currently boasts a career record of 400-125 with a career win percentage of 76.2%. Using the latest edition of the Virginia High School League (VHSL) record book, it’s unclear where Motley currently ranks among the all-time great women’s basketball coaches in state history.

Bill Gibson, who has coached West Springfield High School since 1984, is ranked among the all-time leaders in state history with 812 preseason wins. His 13th coach is the only one on the record books, the 13th being former Lord Boteteur coach Chuck Pound with his 404 wins, Motley in the top 15 women’s basketball wins in the state. We can reasonably assume it will.

As for the game itself, Carroll County (17-1, Three Rivers District 7-0) took a 53-14 lead at the break. The Lady Cavaliers beat Radford his 20-0 in the third quarter.

Alyssa Irvin was one of four Cavaliers in double digits to record a game-high 22 points. Alley gave Carroll his 16 points, Hazy added another 15 points, and Easter contributed his 10 points.
