Nashville faith-based program helps mother of 8 reach career goal

Nashville, Tennessee (WSMV) – Mother of eight, Joy Yates is about to launch her dream career as a human resources manager.

“She’s now prepping for a big interview with Tennessee,” said Carol Peterson, executive director of Uprise Nashville, a free career training program. “This will be her first step into Lang.”

But Yeats’ dream opportunity was followed in recent years by a real-life nightmare. She and her husband, a restaurant food her cleaner, moved from the Northeast to Nashville in search of better opportunities for her restaurant business just before the pandemic hit.

Soon after, Yeats’ husband had to sell tools to support his family, followed by housing and transportation challenges.

Despite her struggles, Joy has lived up to her name.

“Last week Joy was on her way to the Urise after dropping the kids off at school and the brakes literally hit the ground off the car,” Peterson explained. My husband picked her up and brought her here so she could complete the certificate process in Microsoft Word and Excel.”

Peterson said Yates kicked off every obstacle that stood in her way.

“Every day she showed up at UpRise ready to work,” says Peterson.

Peterson said the apples didn’t fall far from the tree.

Peterson said the faith-based program, which has been in place for five years, has ensured that people show up on time, do what is asked of them, and are ready for a career path, not just a job. “Pressure test” your ability to prove .

“And each time, Joy showed she was the right person for the job,” Peterson said.

WSMV4 listed career coaches at UpRise for helping Yates prepare for virtual interviews.

“What drives you to work hard?” the coach asked Yeats.

“I know my children, my family, and I can be proud of myself,” Yeats replied.

When asked about Monday afternoon’s interview, Yates thinks she did well.

“I’m so excited!” said Yeats.

UpRise is currently helping Tier 13 leaders earn certifications in IT, Healthcare, Microsoft Office and other programs.

Over the course of several months, the program offers free opportunities that can help you escape poverty and change the trajectory of your life.

And hopefully for Yates, who will be there just in time for Christmas.
