Pele’s full name, named after Thomas Edison, was Edson Arantes do Nascimento. He’s had many nicknames over the years, but it took him a while to get used to Pele.

One of his first nicknames was Dico, but it never became a lifelong name. When he started attending school, he was given the name Pele when he mispronounced the name of Vasco de Gama goalkeeper Bile as Pele. I didn’t like it because I thought it sounded like, but the name seemed to stick.

“I was really proud to be named after Thomas Edison and wanted to be called Edison,” Pele told The Guardian in 2006. Electricity exploded in his hometown the year Pele was born, apparently named after the inventor of the incandescent light bulb.

“I thought Pele’s voice was terrible. Edson,” Pele said. I like the name now, but back then it was endless. “
