Samuel Ersson gets first career win as Flyers finally win in OT

It took eight tries, but the Flyers eventually won in overtime. After being trailed by two goals, the Flyers recovered behind rookie Samuel Elson on his goal and won in overtime thanks to a timely goal by Tony DeAngelo. The Flyers entered the contest with his 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks in their first game on the California road trip.

DeAngelo has responded well since being benched. He has appeared in five games since becoming a healthy scratch. In the first two games he recorded no points. He has appeared in three games since his seven points, three-game scoring streak, and his three-goal streak on Thursday night.

Ersson took his first career victory. In his first game, he was forced out of the net by the Carolina Hurricanes, but had to return to duty after Carter Hart was injured. Ersson performed well in the second division of Canes’ game to earn a starting lineup against San Jose.

Again, there were some rookie anxieties. Thomas Hertl scored the opening goal at 9:38 in the first and scored again in second on a power play. After Travis Koneckny scored for the Flyers less than a minute after Hertl’s first, his second goal broke a 1–1 draw. Ersson scored 25 of his 28 shots he faced and looked great after settling down.

Kevin LeBlanc scored just 52 seconds into the third period. And what happened recently is that the Flyers woke up in the third period to find a scoring leg.

First, Owen Tippett scored his 11th goal of the year after receiving a pass from James van Riemsdyk. With just over two minutes left in the game, and with the Flyers having an extra attacker, Konekny had a shot from near the blue line. The puck cuts through traffic and fends off a Shark defender to tie the game

In overtime, the Flyers intercepted a pass and the Sharks were off for a line change. In a 3-on-1 development, DeAngelo, Provorov and Tippett were passing the pack back and forth until Provy found DeAngelo, who squeezed the pack past a sliding Kappo Kahkonen to secure the win.

The Flyers travel to SoCal to face the Los Angeles Kings on New Year’s Eve afternoon. Let’s see if they can close out his 2022 with his second straight win.
