Steve Botkin eclipses 600 career coaching wins in Sahuaro’s 3-0 day at Goodyear tournament

With the Cougars’ first victory at noon Friday — a 59-15 win over Scottsdale Chaparral — Botkin completed his 600th career win.

A 44-25 win over Buckeye Union and an 80-6 win over ALA-Anthem South improved his career record to 602-188. He is in his 22nd year of coaching at Saguaro after six seasons of coaching at Rincon/University to start his career.

The Cougars (12-0) could play three more games on Saturday if they reach the championship by winning the quarter-final and semi-final rounds.

Botkin is modest when it comes to his accomplishments. He would rather talk about the player and his family.

“I just teach them family,” Botkin told Brittany Bowyer After the first two wins on Friday. “We are a big family unit. Having my own personal family (my daughter is her assistant coach) is the biggest part of coaching.

“I love Saguaro. I am a Saguaro graduate. My wife is a Saguaro graduate. is.”

Botkin, 54, leads all coaching career victories in Southern Arizona.

He was hired as Saguaro’s head coach in 2001 and replaced Jim ScottRetired after 14 years as Saguaro coach.

Scott has 333 wins among women’s basketball coaches in Southern Arizona, the third-most wins. Mike Dyeris second to former Marana with 337 wins.

Another important milestone for Botkin is approaching. It’s his 500th win at Saguaro. His 22-year record with the Cougars is his 495 wins and 122 losses.
