The five career resolutions you should make today

If you have a specific career goal, change, or upgrade you would like to make, this is the time to commit to doing it. Here’s how to make it happen in 2023, whether you want to or not.

I want a raise

Given today’s volatile job market and volatility, especially in the tech sector, “get ready to prove you deserve a raise,” says a loyalty program for New York City renters. said Ciara O’Sullivan, People Director at Bilt Rewards.

But before you start a conversation with your boss, take a tip from O’Sullivan and look up equivalent roles at different companies. Thanks to New York City’s new Pay Transparency Act, all businesses are required to list truthful salary ranges for jobs, promotions or transfer positions.

Keep in mind that you need to be financially cautious when changing course. “Changing jobs is dangerous,” said Rosencrans. “During the searching months, you should always have your finances in order and make sure you can afford to do this pause and switch gears.”

I want to continue working remotely

Communication is key if you want to continue your work-from-home setup. “Talk to your boss early and often to make sure you’re always aware of what you’re thinking and feeling,” says O’Sullivan. “If you want to continue working from home, share your reasons why: it has increased your productivity, you have kids to pick up from school, you are taking care of a sick parent.”

Maybe you simply like to work quietly and your office is too noisy. “Again, you want to be in ‘prove’ mode,” said O’Sullivan. “If you’re working two extra hours because you’re not commuting from Long Island to Manhattan, say so. If you’re most productive between 8:00 p.m. Explain that and if you can join the conference call at 5:30 p.m. because you don’t have to pick up your child from daycare, please share that too.”

Upskill or want to upskill

O’Sullivan says your boss is unlikely to ask if you want to learn more skills or review your existing skills to make sure they’re kept up to date. Consider signing up for free LinkedIn Learning courses, listening to leadership podcasts, and watching career coaching and leadership skills videos on TikTok.

If you’re interested in a paid course, let your boss know you’re interested. “Say something like, ‘I found this training and I know it will help my team with the following’ and then ask if they have budget available for things like Adobe courses.”

Don’t let your manager find you a course. “They are already very busy,” said O’Sullivan. “This is a good time for you to show initiative.”

First of all, you don’t have to tell anyone at work that you plan to have children.

“I hope you’re welcome to start a family and work for a company that doesn’t put you at a disadvantage because it’s illegal,” Rosencrans said. “Also, if a promotion or salary increase is affected by having children, it’s illegal. It’s retaliation.”

However, if you’re in baby mode, now is a great time to get proactive with your schedule. “If you’re working late nights, for example, this isn’t sustainable for a newborn,” Rosencrans said. Next, think about good habits you can practice.”
