Trinity’s (Whitesville) Hernandez to continue basketball career at Ave Maria University

With Nathan Hernandez signing a contract to play college basketball at Ave Maria College in Florida, the Raiders’ resident point guard takes the next step toward his athletic and academic future.

The Trinity (Whitesville) senior leader is coming to the end of a strong junior season with 10.9 points shooting 34.3% from the field and 33.3% from deep. With the Raiders going 4-1 to start the season, Hernandez is averaging 13.8 points on 43.9 percent from the field and 45 percent from across the arc.

Hernandez said he was relieved and excited to know he had made his decision official and now can focus on this high school season and help his team reach their goals. However, he is very much looking forward to attending Ave Maria University in the future. He said it was the best chance he could have to play the game he loved and continue the Catholic education his parents had given him.

“I want to keep growing my faith and work hard to achieve my goals,” Hernandez said. The coaches have been very welcoming and have high expectations, and I look forward to being a part of this basketball program and the culture that exists.”

In addition to the school and the basketball program itself, Hernandez said he is looking forward to studying accounting and finance in a sunny state with beautiful campuses.

“The school is in Florida, with palm trees on the campus, and a great place to spend the next four years,” Hernandez said. “The atmosphere in Ave Her Maria’s community is very family friendly and seems like a great place.”

Hernandez said he’s excited to take the next step at Ave Maria University, but will miss the camaraderie and connections he’s built with the players, coaches and Trinity community.

“We made so many memories that we will cherish forever,” Hernandez said. The students and faculty at Trinity are family and have been a great place to learn over the past four years.”

But before he heads to Florida to compete at the college level, he has a senior season that continues at home against Webster County at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
