Venus Williams to extend career as she accepts Australian Open wildcard


Venus Williams has been issued a wild card to play at the upcoming Australian Open, and it has been confirmed.

Rather than follow her sister Serena into retirement, the 42-year-old has decided to return to the WTA for one final match. This included another appearance in Melbourne.

Despite winning seven Grand Slam singles titles in her career, Venus Williams has never won an Australian Open.

However, she has won five doubles titles in the tournament, four of them with Serena.

“Venus is not only a great player and a fan favorite, she is a great role model and in many ways a leader in our sport,” said Tournament Director Craig Tiley.

“We are delighted to welcome her to AO in January.”

Venus Williams reached the final of the Australian Open relatively recently in 2017, but an injury kept her out this year.

“I am very excited to be back in Melbourne for the Australian Open in January,” Williams said.

“I have been competing in this country for over 20 years and the Australian community has always supported me wholeheartedly. I look forward to creating memories of
