Wise, Virginia — The Catawba women’s basketball team rode Jada Porter’s career game to a 77-63 victory at UVA Wise on Saturday.
Porter threatened the school’s steals record by hitting four 3-pointers and scoring 22 points in the South Atlantic Conference game. She ended up with eight thefts.
Porter got a lot of help from Janiyah Downs (16 points, 6 rebounds), Lyric Thorne (14 points, 7 assists), Sarah McIntosh (13 points, 7 rebounds) and Mercedes Wampler (12 rebounds, 8 assists). got
Lauren Ford and Mary Spree scored another 10 points off the bench.
It was a game of runs, including a 19-0 (13-3, 7-1) by the Indians in the second quarter that led to a 41-32 halftime lead.
UVA Wise (11-6, 3-4) tied the game with 7:27 remaining, but Downs’ 3-pointer sparked the Indians’ last one run to seal the win.
Catawba made nine 3-pointers in the game and had a 60% field goal percentage in the fourth quarter. Catawba had a big advantage in the turnover fight (25-15), limiting UVA Wise to his five offensive boards.
